Background

Amtrak serves more than 500 stations, of which approximately one-third are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in recognition of their cultural value.

Historically, these stations have acted as the gateways to our communities and are a key factor in travelers' perception of the towns we serve.

However, historic designation can impose limitations on the scope of alterations to a property, as upgrades must be balanced with preservation guidelines.

So, Amtrak Innovation and Sustainability partnered on 'Historic Stations of the Future,' an enterprise-wide challenge to imagine how we can modernize our stations sustainably while preserving their cultural and historic essence.

We conducted user research and engaged in a participatory design process to identify the most cutting-edge innovation opportunities, in doing so empowering each person at Amtrak to create a culture of innovation
